Sam Hornish Wins INDY 500!!

Ladies and gentlemen,
Today was one of the, if not the, most emotional Indianapolis 500 races that I have ever seen, and I've pretty much seen them all. And I almost missed this one.

I won't go into a pit by pit run down of the entire race, but I will say that seeing the second closest race in history was one of the highlights of my life so far.

Michael Andretti came out of retirement to run this race, supposedly his last. With 7 laps left he was in the lead with his rookie son, Marco, in second place. Michael's car wasn't up to the challenge, Marco goes around him, Sam Hornish Jr. is in third place behind Marco as Marco goes around Michael. Marco is in the lead with two laps to go. At this point in the race I don't know whether to just turn the TV off and walk away before I die of a heart attack, or cry.

Hornish attempts to pass Marco and falls back, with a half a lap left. By this time, Michael's dream of winning is once again, gone. Hornish is at least six car lengths back behind Marco and here we are thinking that this rookie, Marco Andretti, son of Michael Andretti (who has never won at Indy) and grandson of Mario Andretti (who won in 1969), is about to win the fucking Indy 500 on his first run.

Hornish, like no other driver that I have ever seen, absolutely eats up the track and passes Marco and wins by .0635 of a second. All this transpires within mere inches.

I almost puked.

My heart goes out to Michael. I really wanted him to win. He says that he will take some time and reflect and that by getting so close, he may be back next year. He lost something like 23 pounds and got in pretty much the best shape of his life for this race.

There was some other drama with Hornish and Kanaan. Danica had a very likely chance of winning but caught the shittiest luck in the world when a yellow came out as she was exiting the pits.

Unofficial Results From Indianapolis Motor Speedway

I'm glad Sam won. He deserved and earned it.

For more information on the race and everything IRL go to Official Indy Site.

I'm glad that I chose not to watch the Formula 1 race today. I haven't check the results from that race yet.

See ya.
